At seven times the national average, the gay community represents 35% of the year-round Palm Springs’ population (greater than San Francisco’s noted five times national average).  Sonny Bono (Sonny & Cher fame), as city mayor in the early 90s, openly welcomed the gay population to stabilize the community and to discourage the influx of spring break college rebel rousers.  Palm Springs holds the second largest Gay Pride Parade & Festival the 1st weekend in November.  March and April also hold annual events including the White Party for gay men and during the Kraft Nabisco LPGA Championship the city swells with gay women for the Dinah Shore Weekend.  35 gay resort hotels dot this desert area and Arenas Road in downtown Palm Springs sponsors predominantly gay-oriented restaurants and entertainment.  The gay community peacefully and richly intertwines with the large population of people over 65.
